Who it is for

The XR Advance Programme is part of MECversity and is designed for working professionals who want industry-relevant skills in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR). It also covers the business impact of XR, so it suits people who will build XR projects as well as those who will lead them.

What you will learn

The curriculum is organised week by week, in this order:

  1. Introduction to XR and immersive technologies: XR technologies and their components, key XR devices, the business relevance of XR and XR development platforms.
  2. Navigating XR ecosystems: development tools, setting up development environments, evaluating platforms, case studies and an introduction to the metaverse.
  3. Storyboarding and design in XR: 2D and 3D design, design tools, storyboards for XR projects and AI in storyboarding.
  4. 3D experiences with Blender: the Blender interface, 2D and 3D assets, sculpting and prototyping, materials and textures.
  5. Game development in XR: game engines, setting up XR platforms, the XR Interaction Toolkit in Unity, debugging tools and basic interactions.
  6. XR ethics and market strategies, plus materials, textures and lighting, VR SDKs, hand tracking and gesture control, VR performance and VR interactions.
  7. Design and interaction in more depth: 3D design principles, advanced design techniques, immersive user interfaces, user testing and fine-tuning UX.
  8. Advanced XR development in Unity: essential Unity features, asset management, C# scripting, scripting XR interactions and performance.
  9. Building virtual worlds: immersive environments, interactive elements, optimising, debugging and testing, and case studies of VR projects.
  10. Augmented reality: AR development, AR SDKs, interactive AR content, tracking and performance, and real-world AR applications.
  11. Mixed reality: MR technologies, SDKs and development kits, designing MR experiences, performance and interaction, and real-world MR applications.
  12. Capstone project and final showcase: designing, developing and implementing your own XR experience.
